Easter Seals North Carolina is making coastal recreation more accessible to persons
with disabilities and other mobility impairments by placing adaptive recreation equipment
in North Carolina coastal communities. Easter Seals Beach Ability enables people with
disabilities and other mobility impairments to better access the beach and participate in a
variety of coastal recreation activities with the aid of adaptive equipment.
Easter Seals partnered with local Parks and Recreation Departments, State and
National Parks, Police and Fire Stations, Town Halls, and Kayak Outfitters to loan the
equipment to the public.
The adaptive equipment includes: accessible beach wheelchairs, adaptive fishing
equipment, adapted kayak equipment, handcycles, and accessible golf carts.
Contact the local numbers listed in this article to find out how you, a family member, or
friend with a disability or mobility impairment can borrow this equipment.
Easter Seals Beach Ability is made possible through a grant from the Kate B. Reynolds

From 1835 until 1862, the house at the corner of Smithwick and Church Streets in
Williamston served as the home of the Asa Biggs family. Nineteenth century
expansions of the house to accommodate the Biggs' growing family are exemplary of
regional building practices. The house also reflects local adaptation of the sequence
of Federal and Greek Revival styles popular during the periods it was built and
remodeled. In 1978, the house was taken over by the Martin County Historical
Society. In 1979, the Asa Biggs House was placed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
On street parking only. There are no designated spaces for persons with
disabilities.
Visitors must step up to get on the sidewalk. Then there are five steps and a
high threshold at the entrance to the house. The front door is opened by
using a knob.
The local Tourism Development Authority has visitors information in a large
room off the main hallway. That room has maneuvering space for persons
using wheelchairs. While the floors are level and firm on the first floor, some
furniture in the dining room and den reduces the clear path of travel to less
than 48".
